Fai Chung
Mr. Chung received his BA degree in Speech and Drama
from Oklahoma Baptist University and his Masters degree in Fine Arts from Yale
University. He was Manager of TVB Ltd. and Program Director, Assistant
General Manager and Deputy General Manager of ATV Ltd. He has also been an honorary
lecturer at the graduate level at the University of Hong Kong, a lecturer at
the Hong Kong Baptist College, a lecturer in theatrical studies at the School
of Continuing Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, an appointed member
of the Council of the Performing Arts and Chairman of the Preparatory Committee
of the 2nd Chinese Drama Festival (1998 Hong Kong).
In 1992, on behalf of Hong Kong, Mr. Chung was appointed
a jury member for the 37th Asia-Pacific Film Festival. Mr. Chung was the
first person to present Theatre of the Absurd and Broadway musicals to Hong
Kong audiences in Cantonese.
Mr. Chung has directed over 80 productions, including Equus, West Side Story, Rashomon, Teahouse, Xiaojing Hutong, Grease, M Butterfly, A Sentimental Journey, etc. He has received Best Director Awards (1992, 1993, 1996, 1997), Best Actor Awards (1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999) and the Ten Years Outstanding Achievement Award in 1994 from the Hong Kong Drama Awards, presented by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies. In 1999, he was awarded the Artist of the Year Award (Stage Director) by the Hong Kong Artists’ Guild, and the Drama Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2000. In 2001, Mr. Chung received a Fellowship from the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts.
Beginning in 1967, Mr. Chung has directed and produced numerous dramatic series and other television programmes. He has recently been the narrator for Stories from Afar and Hong Kongers on the Mainland. He has also performed in films like Passion, Love in A Fallen City and HuDuMen.
Mr. Chung is the founding Dean of the School
of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts. He is currently
the principal artistic consultant for the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, an advisory
board member for the Chung Ying Theatre Company, Chairman of the Board of Exploration
Theatre and President of the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies.
His reviews and articles on theatrical theory and performance have appeared
in many local newspapers. Mr. Chung also engages himself in the translation
of dramas such as Equus, Noises Off, Cyrano de Bergerac
and M Butterfly.
