Karley graduated in 1988 from the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts with a major in directing. He became an active dramatist in the seventies and started his professional career in the early eighties. He is the founder of Exploration Theatre and has been the Artistic Director since its establishment in 1982.
Karley has created and directed nearly a hundred drama productions and projects. His works have also been produced overseas in Canada, the United States, Singapore and Macau. He received the Ten Years Outstanding Achievement Award in 1994 from the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies and the Ten Most Popular Drama Productions Award for Dragon Legend. He was also nominated for an Outstanding Director Award for Dragon Legend at the 6th Hong Kong Drama Awards in 1997.
Karley, with his pseudonym Mok Hei, is amongst the most prominent playwrights in Hong Kong. He has claimed numerous Best Original Play Awards at the Urban Council Drama Festivals and at the Urban Council Awards. His playwriting credits also include one Best Script and two 1st Runner-up Awards from the Council for the Performing Arts Best Script Awards of 1992 & 1993. In 1997, his Dragon Legend was awarded the Best Script Award at the 6th Hong Kong Drama Awards.
Fundamental to Karley's work is his belief in the transformative power of creativity through theatre. Karley is a pioneer in the creation of participatory theatre in Hong Kong, and has developed numerous innovative community outreach projects since the early nineties. A production of his work Close to My Heart, written for the Liver Foundation, was invited to perform at Governor House in 1996.
Karley's work is committed to creative participation and learning. Since 2000, he has developed a number of new and pioneering drama-in-education projects to facilitate growth and creativity. In collaboration with cultural and educational sectors, he initiates creative learning projects that offer a wide spectrum of innovative programmes for students and teachers alike. To date, Karley has trained over 15,000 students, teachers and business professionals.
Karley is an advisor for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (Drama), as well as its assessor and examiner. He is also a member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Drama-in-Education Curriculum of the Education and Manpower Bureau (2002-04), the Secretary of the Hong Kong Drama/Theatre and Education Forum (2003), and a member of the Board of Adjudicators for the Hong Kong Drama Awards.
